Just in case you haven't gotten around to them yet, I'll suggest seeking out other Schubertian works with piano in addition to his sonatas: the "Wanderer" Fantasy, the Impromptus, the Moments Musicaux, the wondrous Fantasy in F minor, and chamber works like the "Trout" Quintet and Piano Trios.

Sep 22,  · This duality of expectation made me enthusiastic to hear this Moments musicaux and Sonata D , but not without a little trepidation as to what I might find. As the ECM blurb points out, these two Schubert opuses are relatively extrovert works, though as Radu Lupu shows, the Moments musicaux are also filled with poetry and eloquence of expression.

CD 1 ends with those two Beethoven Op sonatas, the deceptive simplicity in parts of which making one wonder why Radu Lupu wasn’t more interested in Haydn. Intensity and depth are qualities one would not so readily associate with these pieces, and indeed, there is a wit and lightness in Lupu’s playing here which defies gravity.
